How to Set up Google Tag Manager on Shopify

On this page you’ll find a simple and detailed step-by-step guide for installing Google Tag Manager on your Shopify store. This guide is prepared specifically for non-Plus stores.

1. Go to https://tagmanager.google.com/ and create a new account.
2. Give your account and container a name and select Web and click Create.
3. Once your account is created, a popup will appear with the Google Tag Manager’s code. Copy the first code snippet.
4. Go into your Shopify store’s admin under Online Store > Themes > Edit Code.
5. Navigate to your theme.liquid file and paste the code close to the opening <head> tag at the top. See example:
6. Copy the second code snippet from Google Tag Manager.
7. And paste it in the same theme.liquid file right after the opening <body> tag.
8. Next, go back to Google Tag Manager and copy the first code snippet.
9. In Shopify, navigate to Settings > Checkout > Additional Scripts > Order Status page > Additional Scripts. And place the code at the top before any other scripts you might have installed.
